Beginner

Country Schoolhouse welcomes new artists to decorative painting into any of our weekly "open workshop" classes. If you are a beginner of decorative painting and want to learn how to paint, we are the people to see. As a beginner, we will start you off with proper surface preparation and take you through all the steps to have a beautiful finished piece.

Here are some tips for anyone starting to explore decorative painting:

  1. Start simple. Look for a pattern or class that is designed for beginners to decorative painting. There are many nice projects that are wonderful for teaching the basics.

  2. Invest in a good brush. Nothing can ruin a project more quickly than a bad brush. Remember, the brush is your tool – it’s your number one way to create a project. So, spend a little more on a quality brush – it will be worth it.

  3. Prepare your surface. The surface you use for decorative painting becomes your canvas. It is important to learn how to prepare a surface so it becomes suitable for painting. You do not want a surface to drink in too much paint – and you want the color to hold. Make sure which ever surface you use, that it is properly treated before you begin your project.

  4. Good posture. If you intend to become a serious decorative painter, sitting correctly while painting not only makes sense, it can impact the outcome of your project as well.

  5. Practice. Practice. Practice. The more you practice the skills you learn, the better artist you will become. Decorative painting is an art. Even if you spend 30 minutes a few times a week, it will all add up. Or better yet, join a club or class that meets weekly – that way you’re sure to improve.
